Pay all your bills on time - this includes mortgage payments, auto payments, utility bills, and credit cards.

Keep the balances on your credit card(s) low - preferably below 10%, but no more than 30%. Financial institutions like to see you have a record of on-time payments and that you are not maxing out your cards. If you are carrying a high balance, you will want to get them down to 30% or lower.

Keep your credit card(s) active - it is best to not leave a $0 balance so that creditors can see you are making use of your revolving credit. If you have a credit card that is currently unused, make sure to occasionally make a purchase on it to prevent it from being closed. Remember that credit age is 15% of your credit score, so the longer your accounts stay open, the better.

Be patient - building long-lasting positive credit takes time. It is a practice you should maintain throughout your life.
